Back In The Day

Published by John Hager Music(BMI) and written by John Hager, Bet Your Sweet Bippy , a play on Rowen & Martin's much repeated "Laugh In" quip "you bet your sweet bippy" was recorded by The Wrest after they won the Wisconsin Jaycee's State Battle of the Bands in 1968.

Recorded in Appleton, WI by Al Posniak at Target's 4 track studio (Target 1003) and later picked up by Tower records, a division of Capitol, (Tower 484) "Bet Your Sweet Bippy" reached top 10 on Milwaukee's Hit Parade and reached Billboard's National Top 100 Weekly Hit Parade.

Milwaukee's WRIT played it; WOKY listed it on their chart but refused to play it. Despite the #1 station in the state refusing to play it, the 45 reputedly sold around 10K in Wisconsin based mainly on airplay all over the state. If a valid figure, 10K sales in that era in WI was "hit" territory.

Hager recalls "The Ohio Express were rumored to be tracking the record and if it broke in one more market they might cover it we were told. Target records sold the recording to Tower records a national label. Tower went out of business within months after buying it. End of "Bippy." ...years later Jim Spencer confided "I drove off the road laughing" when he heard it on the air ...needless to say, we became good friends.

The Target folks put my name down as a producer tho I had nothing to do with the production of the record. If I had it would have been a hammed up bubble gum record with kazoos and an accordian thrown in; maybe one verse sung with a pronounced german or polish accent... that's how I heard it in my head

It sold some records, 25 years later Jon Hall booked an oldies tour around the state - said it was the hottest song - I saw where the group was playing it at summerfest 40 years later. all in all, not bad for "a horrible little song." Milwaukee's The Wrest (1969)

Bet Your Sweet Bippy

When I was a little boy, my mama cornered me
She asked me why I was so bad, I answered simply...baby

Bet your sweet bippy I'm a hippy hippy hippy and I dig doin simply nothin but rollin
in the grass bare, takin trips in the air & pickin lint from my belly button

Hip, hip, hip Im a hippy Bet your sweet bippy Im a hippy yeah

One day I should have been at school, got caught downtown instead
My principal asked why my hair grew so far from my head...I said

Bet your sweet bippy Im a hippy hippy hippy and I dig doin simply nothin but rollin
in the grass bare, takin trips in the air & pickin lint from my belly button

Hip, hip, hip Im a hippy .... Bet your sweet bippy Im a hippy yeah

Now, I got a chick who spreads her love all over me
I got her on the day I told her very tenderly... baby

Bet your sweet bippy Im a hippy hippy hippy and I dig doin simply nothin but rollin
in the grass bare, takin trips in the air & pickin lint from my belly button

Hip, hip, hip Im a hippy bet your sweet bippy Im a hippy yeah.
